Greek Eats

While in Greece we ate at some incredible restaurants. Instead of posting the reviews one after another (and losing your interest in travel), I’ve got a list of recommendations should you happen to find yourself there 🙂

1. Aleria (Athens) – Easily one of the top three meals I had during my two-week stay, and honestly one of the best steaks I have ever had.

We started with a selection of four house-made breads paired with sea-salt, butter, and olive oil. Next came our mains – the taste of which matched the eloquent presentation, and paired them with a delicious Greek wine. Finally, we enjoyed a modern take on baklava paired with cinnamon ice cream. A total disservice to the restaurant, I didn’t have my camera to capture its glory!

2. La Maison (Imerovigli, Santorini) – Settled in the village of Imerovigli, this restaurant is a great way to enjoy the sunset but avoid the bustling crews (and high prices) of Fira. The meals are French inspired, and if you take the first seating, you get an incredible view of the sunset.

I could describe each meal in detail, from how full of flavour it was, to the tenderness of the meat, to the creamy sauce in my carbonara pasta, but I think I’ll let the photos do the talking. This place is rated #1 on Tripadvisor, and that is a rating I completely agree with.

^ This dessert was unreal. Dark chocolate ice cream, nutella mousse, and smoked dolce de leche. Dangerously delicious.

3. Ambrosia (Oia, Santorini) – Referred by a friend, this restaurant sits on the cliffs of Oia. Rather than providing a view of the sunset, it provides a rare view of Fira as the sun sets upon it and the great opportunity to watch the activity in the sea below. I will have to apologize again, no pictures of the food.

The service is impeccable and the owner is personally there helping out and welcoming guests.

We started with delicately crafted appetizers – salmon tartare, calamari, and tomato-feta soup. All of which were gobbled up quickly as a testament to their taste.

For mains – it was a mixture of pastas and fresh fish. I had the catch of the day which was perfectly grilled, succulently juicy, and topped with a lemon-caper sauce. The pastas were smothered in creamy sauces and paired with tender meat.

And for desserts – I had the most amazing chocolate brownie with ice cream. So soft and moist, every one knew there was no point in asking for a bite.

4. Paralia (Heraklion, Crete) – Rated as #12 on Tripadvisor, this place should be #1! The waitstaff is incredibly friendly and they brought us tons of freebies (which doesn’t hurt)! Fresh fruit, raki, and an island pastry topped with honey and ice cream.

We ate here for lunch and our meals were light, fresh, and tasty!  I had a refreshing (and cheesy) vegetable risotto, while Cole enjoyed a pork gyro with potatoes and fresh pita.

5. Galini Cafe (Fira, Santorini) – Now I don’t want you to think I only eat lunch and dinner. Everyone knows breakfast is the most important meal of the day! We stumbled into this place while walking the “Donkey Trail” between Imerovigli and Fira.

It’s paired with a hotel, but the restaurant is as cozy and homemade as you can get. A small number of tables sit on the balcony to admire the view while the two chefs cook everything behind a counter 5 feet away.

The meals are of massive proportion and exceptionally scrumptious. I had a crepe stuffed with strawberries and white chocolate, while the others had eggs benedict, omlets, and french toast.

We enjoyed our meals and sipped house made speciality drinks such as lattes, hot chocolates, and greek coffees.
