Last week I went to the movies and while I was deciding what to order (do I want popcorn…chocolates…candy…you know how it goes) I saw the Pretzel M&Ms. For those of you who have not tried them, they are THE BEST! I had them for my first time last year when friends brought one of those “party sized” bags on a long-weekend getaway and, since then, I’ve been hooked. Anyway, needless to say I ended up going with the combo so I could get popcorn and chocolates.
The next day, I was scanning my usual cooking blogs for new ideas, and I came across this gem. I figured if they were even half as good as Pretzel M&Ms than it was worth a try.
The cookies turned out chewy and tender, and the little pretzel bites were nice and crunchy. The peanut butter flavour was not too strong, but I did find the odd cookie a little too salty. I am not sure if this was the result of using pretzels or if this was the result of not crushing the pretzels up fine enough. Next time I might skip adding salt into the batter and see what happens. I would also add about 1/4-1/2 cup more chocolate chips to compensate for any salty flavour.
Overall, they were pretty tasty and they did satisfy my sweet and salty cravings 🙂 Basic chocolate chip cookies will always be my favourite, but this is a good recipe when you are looking to mix things up.
– 1 cup flour
– 3/4 cup crushed pretzels
– 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
– 3/4 teaspoon salt
– 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
– 3/4 cup peanut butter
– 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
– 3 Tablespoons milk
– 1 Tablespoon vanilla
– 1 egg
– 1/3 cup chocolate chips (I used “mini” ones)
Step One: Whisk the flour, pretzels, baking soda, and salt.
Step Two: In a separate bowl, whisk the brown sugar, peanut butter, shortening, milk, egg, and vanilla on medium-speed.
Step Three: On low speed, slowly add in the flour mixture to the batter. Finally, stir in the chocolate chips.
Step Four: Place balls of dough onto a cookie sheet and bake at 375F for 8-10 minutes (depending on size).
PS: For those of you wondering, the movie was “Neighbors” and it was HILARIOUS! Highly recommended
