With a list of Naxos’ best beaches in hand, three of us set off to rent a quad so we could cruise the island. Perhaps we would splurge on a dune buggy but we weren’t sure just yet…
Instead, after a few excited giggles by all, we ended up with this bad boy #minicooper
After the initial fear of driving in Greece subsided, we were in bliss while the wind blew through our hair and the sun bronzed our skin.
To say it was the perfect day for a convertible would be an understatement.
Our first stop? Aliko beach.
Suggested by the car rental agent, atop the hill sits an abandoned hotel and below it, crystal clear turquoise waters.
Beyond any paradise I could imagine, we were among the only 8 people in the sandy cove. Beside us were 4 smaller coves, each occupied by only one or two more people.
Can we just take a moment to focus on the water..
We lay on our newly purchased beach towels, swam, and jumped in the waves on the rare occasion a boat passed by.
I slathered on my tanning oil and turned on my iPod. Pure happiness.
After a few hours, we returned to the car and continued beach hunting.
Along the coast we drove, through tiny beaches and down sandy dirt roads.
We passed by Mikri Vigla, Agios Prokopios, Plaka, and Kastraki. All of which were filled with perfect places to lay a towel and jump in the water.
Some were filled with beach chairs and windsurfers, while others more secluded and quiet.
A perfect day.
To top it all off, back in town a patisserie had been calling my name. Literally bounding into the store, I picked out two mini-cakes for 3 Euros each (a total steal!!). The shop is called Aktaion.
It’s a quaint little boutique, filled with rows of elaborate mini-cakes, mousses, ice creams, and macarons. It is a dream-come-true for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Although tempted by the blackberry and white chocolate cake, I carefully picked a milk chocolate coating stuffed with hazelnuts and chocolate ganache, and a milk chocolate mousse stuffed with dark chocolate.
Arguably made for one, it is probably best to share these with a friend. Although, given how scrumptious they are – you might not want to!
Onwards we headed, to the Olive Press, but I’ll save that for tomorrow.
