A Little Piece of Paris at Home

I should begin by telling you I absolutely love France. Having visited Paris and spent two weeks traveling through the French Riviera, a good french macaron is something I got used to. It was so easy to walk into a little boutique, pick out a few, and eat them along a river while taking in the french culture.

Sadly, that is not a reality back here in Calgary! Until now…

A new shop of sweets has just opened up in The Core – Monplaisir Delicacies. Now, it may not be located along a cobblestone road nestled between old, stone buildings but really, beggars can’t be choosers.

Selling French macarons, Belgian chocolates, and a various selection of nougats, this pop-up boutique is the perfect way to enjoy a little piece of Paris without first sitting on an 8 hour flight.

I eagerly made my way down, camera in hand, to check out the macarons and see if they could rival my favorites back at Laduree. Dangerously enough: they do.

After marveling at the flavors and color combinations through the glass casing, it was time to make a selection and actually test a few. Besides, I was starting to hold up the line of eager patrons.

I decided on a box of ten different macarons – although with close to 22 flavours it was a hard choice. In the end, we asked for two more to eat on the way home.

We carefully canvassed the selection, and ended up with: White Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel Crunch, Espresso, Pistachio, Lemon, Nutella, Rose Lychee, and Dark Chocolate.

But that’s only 9 you say? Well…we did have to pick doubles of a few because I was certainly not looking to share. At this point I will admit, my eyes did have a bigger appetite than my stomach.

The macarons are a pretty decent size. Two inches in diameter, the meringue base is crunchy and fluffy, stuffed with a deliciously creamy ganache filling. photo 5

We munched a few back at home, before saving the rest for dessert the following day.

My favourites you ask?! Dark Chocolate and Mocha. I couldn’t stop talking about them for hours! In fact, I may need to make another stop…

A la prochaine!
