I’ve said it more than once, but we’ve been having some pretty amazing summer weather here in Calgary.
And, what better way to celebrate then to head outdoors for a picnic.
Luckily, Downtown Calgary is putting on weekly popup picnics at various parks downtown, and they’re perfectly slotted from Noon ‘till 1. This means that even if you’re working, you can head outside for a bite to eat, some fun events, and perhaps a quick afternoon snooze.
The first one just happened this week, kicking things off in one of the most central locations of all, Harley Hotchkiss Park. You know, that beautiful park just off the train line and across the street from the court house? Or, 611 4th Street SW is the real address if your brain works better that way.
I headed down a bit early to grab a prime spot in the sun (and a picnic blanket!) and watched as the space was transformed from a quiet patch of grass, into a bustling inner city gathering.
Fromage Chaud struck a cord and began filling the air with the relaxing and classical sounds of string instruments.
Happening now Downtown! The pop-up picnic is getting started with this beautiful music by Fromage Chaud! As guests began to fill in and either took a spot on one of the provided blankets, or set up their own, I figured it was time for me to do the same.
Sprawling out my sun essentials including sunscreen, SPF lip butter and my camera, and tossing off my shoes.
And, of course, not forgetting something to eat.
One of the best parts about the Pop Up Picnics is that there are so many great places to grab a bite before you head on over.
This time, I was treated to an assortment of pizzas from Double Zero – with as much Pepperoni and Polynesian to feed a small army. Or, perhaps me on a super hungry day.
But, a few other picnic friendly places would include:
- A salad from Dirtbelly (mix & match or add ahi tuna, chicken, or avocado)
- A burger or wrap from Holy Grill (my favourites are the Super Burger and the Mr. Chicken – don’t forget the fries!)
- The chicken bento box from Goro + Gun
- Fish and Chips from Local
Of course, there’s so many more depending on the location of your office – or the location of the picnic, which hops around town all summer! Or, you can always go the frugal route and bring your own meal.
Either way, once you set yourself up and grab a few friends, your lunch hour will feel like anything but the usual.
I sat back, relaxed, and stared up at the clouds – rotating around only to stuff my face with a few more pepperoni slices.
And then, toured around a bit more.
The theme of this week’s picnic was Magic, so they had a number of magicians floating around performing tricks, as well as a station where you could levitate! Or at least which made it look that way.
There are different themes each week though, so check out the website here – or just arrive and be surprised.
I was so thrilled to see so many of you out at the first picnic, and I can’t wait to see even more of you out there next time! It’s such a treat to be able to enjoy the weather and the popup shops add a bit more of excitement to any slow-moving Wednesday. There are so many lovely spots in town, and I think we often forget to take advantage of them!
The events are completely free and they’re family friendly and open to the public! All you need to do is bring a lunch and grab a few pals, and Downtown Calgary will do the rest.
What’s most important is that you enjoy yourself, relax, and perhaps do a bit of cloud watching.
Mark your calendars now, because you won’t want to miss out on the next ones – on now until the end of summer:
