Sometimes all I want is pasta. Okay, all the time, all I want is pasta. Carb-loading anyone?
Mercato is one of my favourite spots for nights when I feel like pigging out at home, but I don’t necessarily feel like cooking.
They have an excellent market with salads, soups, appetizers, meats, cheese, and of course, homemade pastas. Everything is pretty reasonably priced, flavourful, and just straight up authentically Italian.
I always pop in intending to purchase one thing, yet leave with a bag of supplies. And after a long day at the office, this trip was no different.
In the end, I settled upon some of their delicious homemade focaccia bread. It’s oily, soft, chewy, and pairs excellently with oil & balsamic vin. I dare you to try and eat just one bite.
I also selected a generous portion of their homemade pasta – easily enough for 3 or 4 large servings. I always go for triploline because it’s just so funky.
And of course, I snagged a jar of their house-made Bolognese sauce. Because as you might know now, I’m really it. They have a pretty wicked selection of sauces though from mild and meaty, to spicy, or even creamy. Something for any mood!
I carried my items up to the counter and was in the process of paying when I spotted the desserts. Now you know me, I just had to snag a few. Usually I go for the pizzelles but since they weren’t available I picked up a couple tart and fluffy lemon cookies.
After paying, I took my spoils home, threw the noodles in a pot of warm water and heated up the sauce. Devouring the focaccia bite by uncontrollable bite. Toss on a little fresh parm and you’re good to go!
I highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a nice meal to enjoy at home – or if you want to fake like you’re a pro at Italian cooking. Everything is so fresh and flavourful and the quality is exceptionally high.
