Spring Beauty Essentials

With a new season comes a variety of new beauty products and springy shades. A little low on my favourite items, I stopped into Sephora for some inspiration and a bit of a spring re-haul.

My makeup routine tends to be pretty quick as I  sleep in until that last minute and then scramble to get ready and out the door. As a result, I try to limit myself to 10 minutes or less. I’m not a big fan of the “covered in makeup” look, so I try to keep things natural – which definitely helps me stick to my time limit.

I look for items that are of good quality, soft on my skin, and add just a touch of colour to my cheeks and lips. But most important of all, they have to feel light yet last throughout the work day. I never want to be one of those girls touching up her makeup in the bathroom every 5 minutes.

Mixing some of my old and new products, I’ve got a new list of staple items that I can’t live without. I’ve linked each item to the brand’s website as well as Sephora for any of your beauty lovers. Check them out below!

For your skin:

Philosophy “Purity” cleanser

This beauty is soft and gentle on my skin, but it still has the strength the remove any trace of makeup or mascara from my face. I’ve been using it for about 5 months and it always leaves me feeling clean and refreshed.

Smashbox primer

This is one of my newer purchases. I squeeze a pea-sized amount into my hands and gently rub it over my face before I apply any makeup. It has a silky smooth texture which makes my skin feel smooth to the touch. It also helps in giving my makeup that extra push to last all day long.

For your cheeks:

Benefit Hervana blush

I absolutely love Benefit products, and the range of pink hues in this blush is nothing different. When mixed together, they produce the perfect rosy pink to enhance the apples of my cheeks and give me that vibrant, refreshed look. It’s the perfect blush for both spring and summer.

Josie Maran Illuminizer

This illuminizer/highlighter is one of Sephora’s newest items. It comes in a liquid bottle form, a stick, and a concealer tube. I chose the stick because it’s the easiest and fastest to apply. I dab a small amount in the corners of my eyes, swipe the stick above my eyebrows, and then swipe it just under my eyes across my cheeks and blend. It gives a beautiful champagne-toned glow and provides just enough light to really open up my face. So far, it’s a winner.

For your eyes:

Nars neutral eyeshadow basics kit

This is the perfect kit to take you from day to night. It’s got a range of light to dark hues that will match any outfit, produce that smokey eye, or even highlight the corners and arches of your eyes. The powder lasts pretty well and a little bit goes a long way.

Benefit brow kit

Now that stronger and fuller eyebrows are back in style, I love to enhance the look of mine by filling in any thin spots. This kit is perfect because it provides you a lighter shade for outlining, and then a darker shade to fill everything in. As a note, the powder is much darker than it looks so I picked the lightest shade available. The small brushes help me draw clean lines and make natural-looking arches, while also getting in between my brow hairs to fill in any over-plucked spots. This product easily lasts all day and it doesn’t rub off every time I accidentally  touch my eyebrows.

Benefit “They’re Real” mascara

This product is one of my oldest favourites. It makes my eyelashes look long and beautiful with just one stroke. The perfect product for a night out or for the mornings after when I just want to keep my face makeup free. It’s a bit of a pain to remove, but if you use the cleanser I listed above, it comes off pretty easily.

For your lips:

Nars funny face lipstick

If you’ve been reading “How to be Parisian wherever you are”, you’ll have been inspired – like me – to never leave the house without a touch of lipstick. Springtime means bold bright shades and this lipstick is my go-to. It has a pink shade that is professional enough for work, but will also vamp up any casual look for a trip to the mall or a night out with friends. Plus, it wears pretty well through eating/drinking.

Sara Happ lip scrub and lip gloss

I got this lip scrub and gloss as a Christmas gift. It’s one of those things that you might not have spent the money on for yourself, but it’s such a treat to use that you love it. I apply the set nightly to leave my lips soft and supple for the morning. Or, if I’m looking for a shine that is going to last, I’ll apply the gloss over a lipstick before heading out. Plus, the confetti scent is soo yummy.

For everything else:

Betsey Johnson perfume

A girl should never leave the house without a spritz or two! This perfume has been a long-time favourite of mine. I absolutely adore the flowery and girly scent – so fresh and fun. Plus, the bottle is gorgeous enough to leave out on your vanity.

Sephora brushes

With all these makeup products you might be looking for a new set of brushes. These Sephora airbrushes are a staple in my collection, and they range in sizes from concealer and eyeshadow, to blush and foundation. They are super soft on my skin and apply makeup like a boss, giving you that perfect airbrushed look.

Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-powder

With a new do comes a new hair product! Because my hair is thin I need a product that gives it volume and helps it hold a bit of texture throughout the day. That’s where this powder comes in. It’s got a bit of grit to it, which holds my hair and lets me adjust it as needed, but it doesn’t give my hair that heavy, product-filled feeling. I shake a bit into my roots and then puff a little onto the ends of my curls for that long-lasting wavy bob look. It’s also a great product to use as a dry shampoo – just shake a little in before bed and you’re good to go come morning! It’s a little pricey, but the bottle is pretty big and it seems to last awhile.
