Artists in the Making

I have to share with you one of THE most fun events. And the best part? It’s not just in Calgary.

Eager to let our inner-artists out, we signed up with the lovely Paul & Anna for Paint Nite. Basically, you select a week, select a painting, buy a ticket, and attend.

Once you arrive, you’re seated in a back room and provided with all the art supplies you will need for the night. Each even takes place at a bar or restaurant and it’s a pretty casual atmosphere. In fact, you’re warned to wear clothes you wouldn’t mind spilling a few drops on.

And if drinking and eating is also your thing, well you’re in luck. Servers mingle their way through the painters every so often, happy to bring you something from the menu.

^ Yes, that is a chicken finger.

^ Clearly, I loved them.

We were anxiously seated as the night began, throwing on our aprons, opening up our stands, and staring at our fresh, white, blank canvasses.

For our night we selected a sailboat painting. Seated at the head of the room, it looked a little bit daunting.

^ Even Cole had pre-painting jitters

But, as you soon find out, it’s pretty easy to re-create! The instructor takes you step by step, telling you how to mix your colours, brush your paint, and make each shape. Creativity, however, is 100% encouraged.

We dipped and dabbed our brushes into blues, reds, yellows, and browns and meticulously placed them onto the canvas. The first stroke is like ripping off a Band-Aid. Once you do it, you realize it wasn’t that bad.

The best part of all is that each person’s painting is a reflection of themselves. Some people were really creative, drawing skulls and crossbones on their sails, or sharks in the water. While others, stuck to making their painting a mirror-image of the template.

Mixing our paint was like a new lesson in primary colours (and a lot more challenging then I would care to admit!). Looking around the room, no two colours were precisely the same.

Our instructor was brilliant and the night was hilarious. I haven’t laughed that hard or for that long, in quite some time.  Our competitive spirit really came out, and I can’t say it wasn’t funny when one of us messed up.

What do you think of the final product? Can you guess who’s is who’s?

So, if painting, drinking, or eating is your thing, get a ticket, grab a brush, and get started. It will seriously be some of the most fun you’ve had.

And by the way, if you’re wondering where this epic apple crisp is from, the answer is Buffalo Bob’s.

I’ve never been before, but the food is seriously tasty. The perfect pub food with gooey mac&cheese, crispy chicken fingers, and some of the best fish and chips.

PS – There is an epic sale on at Groupon right now (1/2 price), but when it ends, all the instructors have a code to get 20% off.
