Last night we were lucky enough to snag 4 tickets to the hockey game. I, eager to chow down, and Cole, eager to watch an all-star on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Flames games are one of my favourite things to do in Calgary. The girls settled in the seats while the boys grabbed drinks & food. As we awaited the game, the arena was filled with loud, pump-up music and flashing red, yellow, and black lights.
The players skated onto the ice, appearing massive with all their gear on, and began to take charge during warmup.
The boys took the opportunity to talk sports, while I enjoyed my hot dog and people watched.
Some of the most entertaining things happen in the crowd – you just have to be looking at the right moment.
Even though I’m not much of a sports fan, I always enjoy listening to the top-40 playing in the background, watching surprised fans on the jumbo screens, and guessing which cup holds the donut. I always hope that we’ll be chosen to win a prize…but sadly, it hasn’t happened yet.
After a few periods we got up to visit some friends in a private box below. The spread was pretty great – fresh fruit, wings, mac&cheese, chocolates, and a quinoa salad.
I helped myself to bowls (literally) of salty and buttery popcorn and pretzels, before eyeing up the chocolates and macarons, and afterwards, an ice cream. By this point, I had eaten enough that I really couldn’t be concerned about a diet of any sort.
Although the view is pretty great, for the most part everyone sat around and chatted.
I did, however, get to see my first “celebrity” – Lanny McDonald…he’s about as big of a celebrity as we get here in Calgary. I tried my best to use my paparazzi skills…but the lack of a photo below just illustrates that I, in fact, do not have any.
