White water rafting was Sunday’s focus. We awoke, had breakfast, threw on our bathing suits, and drove out to the Kicking Horse river. We met our guides, suited up in wet suits and decided to forgo water jackets and brave whatever temperature mother nature threw at us. Our guides gave us a lengthy safety briefing, and shortly after we hopped into our raft and grabbed our paddles. The excursion began by splashing the other rafts and practicing our strokes. The first hit of water was the coldest – but it didn’t take long until we were used to it. Our guide helpfully pointed out the water was “Fresh” – 12 hours ago it was snow (eek!).
Through the upper canyon we went, paddling forwards and backwards through the rapids – holding onto the rope at times. We got our fair share of splashes but everyone thankfully avoided falling out. Filled with adrenaline, we agreed next year we would attempt the “lower canyon”.
After quite the workout, we returned home and filled our bellies with home-made burgers.
Following dinner, we (finally) made a fire outside in the fire pit. Grabbing everything necessary for smores, we headed out intending to spend a couple hours chatting and eating before the misquotes attacked us.
However, one smores and a couple pictures in, the rain started and we all ran inside. Grabbing the cards, we dried off and headed to the main living room where we retired for the rest of the night, ignoring the fact that the morning meant back to reality.
Monday morning we cleaned up and made our journey back home. I don’t know about the others, but I was certainly pooped. Cole and I watched movies the rest of the day while Sophie passed out by the couch.
All in all it was a successful weekend and I’m already looking forward to next year.
